Why Am I Too Hot?
The summer has just gone into overdrive this year, record daily temperatures have already been achieved and we still have the hotter months to come. For some this is welcome news as the previous summer was really a wash out and nothing to get very excited about, let’s go abroad we hear you shout! However, for some this is the start of a nightmare, hot night sweats and damp sheets are just two of the reasons summer is not everyone's idea of heaven and especially not a good night’s sleep!
When you get hot at night it will definitely disturb your sleeping pattern, this is well documented. It is more common now than ever as we scramble to insulate our homes in the wake of the rising fuel bills and cost of living crisis, this makes your bedroom warmer without doubt. So what can we do to help dissipate some of the heat? Open a window? What about my allergies you may say, an open window is great for letting in fresh air but how pure is it. Rising pollen here in the UK affects more and more people each year. What about air conditioning or a fan, great idea but not quite eco-friendly or as easy on the electric bill either.
So, let’s look at your bedding, duvets, pillows and mattress protection, this often over looked area, can be the most beneficial and the heathiest option. We spend a lot of time in bed, not just sleeping but watching TV, reading a book or just lounging around on a lazy Sunday morning but as a nation we do not look at the effects of what we sleep in as much as we really should.
One of the biggest things you need to avoid if you get hot at night is a memory foam mattress, although they can be very comfortable and mould to your body contours, they act like a night storage heater. The heat builds up from under you and will just make you warmer and warmer until you end up kicking off your duvet to make yourself cooler. Then you go cold, pull the duvet over again and repeat the cycle all night long, disturbing your sleep pattern all summer long. They are great for the winter months but how many of us can afford to have two mattresses in the bedroom?
Also another problem is synthetic duvets, if you opt for the plain microfibre duvets that you find in most supermarkets and department stores, they give you a tog rating but this is just a guide and often they are much warmer than stated and just build heat up until you kick it off to try to cool down. Many advancements have been made with manmade fillings, such Aerelle Coolnights fillings, they dissipate heat build-up much more effectively but there is still no substitute for natural fillings like duck down and goose down. You don’t see many ducks or geese falling over in summer due to heat exhaustion, mother nature always provides the best heat and cold protection full stop.
There are many other factors, like your partner for instance, we have yet to find two people that share a bed that like the same mattress, duvet or pillows. We are all so different that it can be mind boggling to get it right. In the last few years, we have been selling more and more partner duvets, this is where you have two different tog ratings in one duvet, a fantastic idea and one that is catching on here in the UK. If you are unsure of what is the best option for you, please give us a call or send us an email as we are more than happy to talk you through the options that might be suitable for you, we have not even got onto the Coolmax bedding options yet as this is for another blog to follow soon.
